Inside An Interior Designer’s Own 800 Sqft Brutalist Home In Singapore

In this week’s episode, a home in Tiong Bahru, built in 1973, unfolds its unique charm.
Spanning 800 square feet, the apartment underwent a significant layout transformation.

The main entrance now seamlessly aligns with the back door, creating a generous social space.

Upon entering, a stretch of glass blocks offers glimpses into the dining area, with changing light textures throughout the day.

A small ledge by the window provides a serene spot for tea amidst greenery. An existing structure, embraced rather than removed, adds character with stripped plaster and paint, featuring subtle indentations.

Natural light plays a pivotal role, accentuating the raw, unfinished textures the homeowners adore. Micro semi-gloss paint and lime-washed walls define lighter tones, while dark vinyl walls present a striking contrast.

Outdoors, and space constraints led to a larger dining table, extending hospitality to friends and family. The kitchen, now with a view, boasts enlarged windows for an airy atmosphere.

Distinctive materials, such as silver ocean stone, unify spaces like the TV console and kitchen countertop. Collections from travels find a place on the TV console, displaying cherished memories.

A round granite dining table introduces contrast to linear forms, complemented by a black chest for a balanced aesthetic. The vanity wash area features black and white micro cement, creating a visually striking composition.

A spacious bathroom, strategically separated from the toilet area, maximizes light penetration through glass doors. Large format tiles resembling standard stone enhance the shower area.

A sliding bucket door clad in wood vinyl separates private and social spaces, adding connectivity and contrast.

The master bedroom exudes tranquility, with minimalistic furnishings against lime-washed walls.

Art pieces, painted by the homeowners, showcase their personalities and deepen the contrasting elements throughout the house.

Despite living there for just over a year, the sense of peace prevails, woven into morning and evening rituals that foster connection.

As always, special thanks to the homeowners for opening up their home to us. If you’d like to get connected to their ID for the design of your own home, you can reach out to them via this link. Successful projects get a $500 Stacked Store voucher!
