Inside An Oriental Brutalist Home With A Unique Glass Brick Walkway

This week, we tour a beautifully renovated 1,076 square-foot, three-bedroom condo apartment. Sam, an in-house legal counsel, has meticulously tailored it to create a unique, personal sanctuary.
Starting with a standard three-bedroom layout, Sam embarked on transformative renovations. The two original bedrooms were merged to form a spacious master bedroom, and the former master room was converted into a purposeful study. A concealed door was artfully integrated into the design, leading seamlessly to these private areas.
Sam combined the living and dining spaces to form an expansive dining area. Here, you’ll find a black-themed brutalist design with oriental touches, including the most eye-catching of all, a hanging light fixture that resembles a dragon moving through the wind. This area, equipped with a three-meter-long dining table, is made for hosting and lacks a television to foster meaningful conversation.

One of the apartment’s highlights is the balcony. Offering impressive views, it’s Sam’s preferred spot for morning coffee. Inside, Jacky Tsai’s ‘Summer Palace’ painting makes a striking statement and fits harmoniously within the overall design.

Moving to the bedroom is a unique experience due to the glass bricks by the walkway and the hammered steel plates of the ceiling to give it a water ripple-like effect.

The bedroom arrangement has been optimised for TV placement, while maintaining the tranquil atmosphere. An innovatively designed walk-in wardrobe hides clothes behind non-glass doors to preserve the color scheme. The en-suite bathroom, mostly kept in its original, well-furnished state, benefits from the addition of corner lights for an enhanced lighting effect.

In response to the COVID era, Sam’s workspace was carefully designed to include a professional backdrop for video calls, doubling as a display for books and other items. Importantly, the study provides a spot for Sam’s piano, allowing him to play without disturbing his neighbors.
