Time flies doesn’t it? While this year may have been a year to forget for many, 2020 has still flashed past so quickly, and we are now at the last issue of UOTW for the year!
Since the launch of our YouTube channel, it has been a whirlwind so far, and our most recent Living In episode of a walk-up apartment in Balestier has set our interest in walk-up apartments again.
While they are mostly in Tiong Bahru, there are some gems in the East as well!

182 Tiong Poh Road
$1,280,000
| Project: | Tiong Bahru Walk-up |
|---|---|
| District: | 03 |
| Address: | Tiong Poh Road |
| Tenure: | 99 years |
| Size: | 1,063 sqft |
| $PSF: | $1,204.14 |
| Developer: | HDB |
| TOP: | – |
Why I like it
For those looking at walk-up apartments, Tiong Bahru would naturally be one of the first stops. It’s surroundings are just part and parcel of the lifestyle those looking at a walk-up apartment would be attracted by.
This one at Tiong Poh Road is just over 1,000 square feet in size, with just 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. There isn’t any balcony of sorts here, so it is entirely liveable space. So as you can see from the photos, the open plan kitchen, living and dining areas are really spacious, and that minimalist interior style just contributes to the open feel of the entire apartment.
The master bedroom is separated by black-framed glass panels, which does make the place feel even bigger. But for those concerned about privacy it does come with curtains that you can close.

2East Ville
$1,478,000
| Project: | East Ville |
|---|---|
| District: | 15 |
| Address: | 43 Joo Chiat Lane |
| Tenure: | Freehold |
| Size: | 1,001 sqft |
| $PSF: | $1,476.52 |
| Developer: | – |
| TOP: | 1966 |
Why I like it
For those looking for a walk-up apartment but aren’t fans of Tiong Bahru, this one at East Ville could be one for consideration. As you can probably tell by its name, it is located in the East – Joo Chiat, to be exact.
Like Ryan’s choice above, this unit is a 2 bedroom one with an almost similar 1,001 square feet in size. It actually used to be a 3 bedroom unit, but that has been knocked away to form a bigger living/dining area and an open plan kitchen.
The result of that is a much more open and airy unit, with the balcony that spans the living and dining area letting a lot of light in.
I do like the interior as well. While it is simple, it’s what I would describe as quaint and in keeping with the character of the area too.
– Druce

3Tiong Bahru Corner Unit
$1,380,000
| Project: | Tiong Bahru |
|---|---|
| District: | 03 |
| Address: | Kim Pong Road |
| Tenure: | 99 years |
| Size: | 799 sqft |
| $PSF: | $1,727.16 |
| Developer: | – |
| TOP: | – |
Why I like it
No surprises here, with another unit at Tiong Bahru itself. This time, it’s along Moh Guan Terrace (closer to all the hipster cafes).
This unit is an originally sized 2 bedroom unit, meaning unlike the rest, it wouldn’t feel as big internally as it is at 799 square feet.
I really do like the interior, it doesn’t feel like anywhere in Singapore, and I can’t say I can even put a finger to its quirky style. What’s cool is its half-circle shaped balcony (with its own bathtub) and the air well that contains a couple of plants next to what looks to be a very comfy daybed. For those who love to curl up with a book and a coffee, this looks to be an ideal spot indeed!

480 Chay Yan Street
$850,000
| Project: | Chay Yan Street |
|---|---|
| District: | 03 |
| Address: | 80 Chay Yan Street |
| Tenure: | 99 years |
| Size: | 818 sqft |
| $PSF: | $1,039.12 |
| Developer: | HDB |
| TOP: | 1937 |
Why I like it
Well what do you know, it’s another walk-up apartment in Tiong Bahru – this time along Chay Yan Street. This is a 1 bedroom unit at a very generous size of 818 square feet, so you can expect the living and dining spaces to be suitably spacious. It comes with a curved balcony, which while some may find to be inefficient, it does make the place look that much more unique.
And this has really translated down to the interior. From the pattern tiles on the floor, to the choice of furniture, it all looks really retro but yet hip at the same time.

5263 Onan Road
$1,250,000
| Project: | Onan Road |
|---|---|
| District: | 15 |
| Address: | 263 Onan Road |
| Tenure: | Freehold |
| Size: | 997 sqft |
| $PSF: | $1,253.76 psf |
| Developer: | – |
| TOP: | – |
Why I like it
This walk-up apartment at Onan Road in District 15 is another of those that used to be a 3 bedroom, but has now been converted to a 2 bedroom at a very respectable 997 square feet in size.
So this means that the living and dining are very much spacious (if you were to compare to new launches today). The layout is squarish and has no weird corners or angles so you could say it is really efficient too.
Aside from that, its interior is a pleasant place to be in. With pink accents it looks bright and pleasing to the eye.
Onan Road is also just opposite Joo Chiat so you are close to a ton of eateries and cafes.
