This week, we tour the home of Charmian and Jay, a 5-room HDB flat in Hougang that spans over 1,260 square feet. This beautiful space has been renovated at a cost of $120,000 (which includes all the appliances).
As you enter their home, you will be greeted by a cozy settee that you can use to put on or take off your shoes. However, what catches your attention right away are the 2 striking blue marble slabs and the wallpaper on the ceiling. The space is designed with darker colors, which creates a warm and cosy atmosphere.
For the kitchen, they cut down the space by half since they felt they wouldn’t use it much because of their working lifestyle. They also installed a kitchen peninsula for extended conversations by the kitchen.
As for the living space, they have pushed the bedrooms back to make the living room bigger. Since the ceiling was lower, they installed curved false ceilings to make it look less prominent.
The dining area is located behind the foyer, and they have carved two holes out of the blue marble slabs so that you can take a quick peek through (and have more light and air flow in this area). One interesting element is the magazine rack located by the common bathroom. They have created a resort-vibe look for the common bathroom, which is perfect for guests.
Another unique feature is by the pantry area, where they incorporated a one-way mirror. This mirror has a dual purpose as it can also be used by those in the study behind it to look through. For the master bathroom, they have chosen large format tiles to prevent grouting. Their master bedroom is separated by a semi-arch door made out of steel and fluted glass. Finally, their wardrobes in the master bedroom are made out of the same maroon red cabinetry in the kitchen for consistency.
Special thanks to Charmian and Jay for showing us around their lovely home. If you’d like to get connected to them for the design of your own home, you can reach out to them via this link. Successful projects get a $500 Stacked Store voucher!
