For those who want something a little different to call home, living in a loft has probably crossed your mind at least once. While it’s not for everyone, its distinctive high ceilings and bigger window panels are charming features that would give you more room to be creative.
In fact, lofts originated in Paris and were designed for artists who needed the height to create oversized art pieces – very apt for more artistic homeowners who like a bit of a twist to their space.
In this week’s Units Of The Week, we have shortlisted five loft units priced under $960K for those who want to attain an ideal loft on a budget.

1Kingsford Waterbay

$850,000
Attribute | Info |
Address | 70 Upper Serangoon View 533883 |
Tenure | 99-year Leasehold |
Size | 657 sqft |
$PSF | $1,293.76 PSF |
Developer | Kingsford Property Development Pte Ltd |
TOP | 2018 |
Why I like it
Sized at 657 square feet, this penthouse unit in Kingsford Waterbay is suitable for those who prefer living in a serene environment.
It has an eye-catching double-volume ceiling with huge glass panels to allow more light into the space and create a more spacious environment.
Due to the high floor, homeowners can also enjoy unblocked city views of the neighbourhood from the balcony.
Furthermore, the unit is tastefully renovated and in a well-kept condition, making it move-in-friendly and great for those who want to save up on renovation costs.
One typical downside to living in a small loft is that privacy might be compromised since the sleeping and common areas are usually located in a singular space. However, this unit comes with a proper bedroom, which is great for those who want more privacy.
Location-wise, it’s about a kilometre away from Kangkar LRT Station or a 2 km walk away from Buangkok MRT Station (North-East Station). So while it’s not the most accessible to public transport, there are enough food and grocery shop options within walking distance.
Hougang Capeview, which has a food court and supermarket, is located a short 3-minute walk away. Alternatively, Buangkok Hawker Centre is around a 1.5km walk away for a wider variety of food options.
The project is located along the tranquil Serangoon Park Connector, which is connected to Punggol Waterway and Coney Island. Punggol Park is also located nearby, making it great for outdoor lovers.
As always, do remember the forested area across the Sungei Serangoon won’t be around forever. Under the URA Master Plan this will mostly become an industrial area.

2Hillsta

Tenure | 99-year Leasehold |
Size | 624 sqft |
$PSF | $1,362.18 PSF |

TOP | 2016 |
Why I like it
This mid-floor loft unit in Hillsta is sized at 624 square feet and comes with a layout of one bedroom, one study room and common living areas.
The afternoon sun is often an important consideration, especially for homeowners who live in double-volume ceiling units and typically have more sunlight filtering in. This unit has a North-South orientation and faces the tranquil pool, making it bright and breezy but not too hot in Singapore’s humid weather.
Apart from the living area, the master bedroom has double-volume ceilings, in which the loft deck can fit a king-sized bed. The previous homeowners chose to make use of the height to create more storage space, which comes in handy to stow clutter away.
Furthermore, this unit comes with a small study room, which can also be converted into another bedroom if needed, making it good for small families.
Located near the Lian Hup Quarry and Phoenix Park, the project overlooks the landed enclave along Phoenix Road. It is around a 7-minute walk to Phoenix LRT station and about a 10-minute walk to Bukit Panjang MRT (Downtown Line) Station.
Eateries and a supermarket are located conveniently just across the street, though there’s also the option to take a short walk to Junction 10, Hillion Mall and even Bukit Panjang Mall.

Why I like it
For those who want to satisfy their dreams of living in a loft within the city, this unit at 8 Bassein might work for you.
Located within the Novena neighbourhood, it takes a 10-minute walk to get to Novena MRT Station (North-South line), which is also connected to several nearby malls, such as Velocity and Square 2.
Furthermore, it’s a short walk away from the numerous eateries located within the shophouses along Balestier Road. Zhongshan Mall and Whampoa Food Centre and Market are also within a 10-minute walk.
This corner unit is located on a high floor, making it a naturally bright and breezy unit. It’s sized at 452 square feet and comes with a bedroom, a bathroom, two balconies and even a home shelter to store clutter out of sight. While it is rather small in size, it has a functional layout that would suit most couples or singles.

4The Tennery

$880,000
Attribute | Info |
Address | 3 Woodlands Road 677901 |
Tenure | 99-year Leasehold |
Size | 614 SQFT |
$PSF | $1,433.22 PSF |
Developer | Dollar Land Singapore Private Limited |
TOP | 2013 |
Why I like it
Sized at 614 square feet, this loft unit comes with a proper-sized bedroom, a bathroom and a balcony, as well as double-volume ceilings in the living area.
The common areas feel much a little bigger as compared to a typical loft unit, perhaps because of the white-based nature of the space. The bathroom also comes with its own bathtub, and is accessible from the master bedroom and the common areas.
The previous homeowners converted the loft area above the kitchen into their sleeping area, which might work out for those with children.
Those who like a brightly lit home would appreciate this unit, as the full-height glass windows in the living room and bedroom allow plenty of natural light into the space. Furthermore, the balcony is rather spacious and can accommodate small outdoor furniture.
The Tennery is seated just above Junction 10, which has a some food options. It does have a supermarket as well, making it convenient to grab groceries and food. Alternatively, there are two other malls nearby, namely Hillion Mall and Bukit Panjang Plaza.
Access to public transportation is also fairly convenient, as Bukit Panjang MRT (Downtown line) is a short 5-minute walk away.

5Watertown

$958,000
Attribute | Info |
Address | 71 Punggol Central 828755 |
Tenure | 99-year Leasehold |
Size | 603 sqft |
$PSF | $1,588.72 PSF |
Developer | Far East Organization, Frasers Centrepoint, Sekisui House Ltd |
TOP | 2017 |
Why I like it
Nestled right above the vibrant Waterway Point Shopping Centre and next to Punggol MRT (North-East line) Station, this unit is ideal for those who like to have a wide variety of amenities close by. The shopping mall is popular for having plenty of dining and shopping options, along with a supermarket.
Furthermore, it’s situated beside Punggol Waterway Park Connector, which makes it ideal for those who enjoy being near the outdoors.
With a size of 603 square feet, this unit has an efficient layout of a bedroom, a study alcove, a bathroom and a balcony. The previous owners have efficiently made use of the ceiling height space to create plenty of shelving and storage area.
While the study alcove is currently used for storage, future homeowners can convert it into another bedroom if needed. Last but not least, I thought that the separated WC and shower area was a great design concept since there’s only one bathroom in this unit. This allows two people to share the bathroom at one time, which is certainly more convenient.
