Large units continue to see strong demand given how COVID-19 has changed how we view our homes as both a space for work and play. With construction delays and increasing costs, renovating homes can also be a huge concern to buyers. That is why we also kept well-renovated units in mind for our search. So without further ado, here are 5 large HDB homes that you’ll likely have to spend little on renovations for!

Why I like it
This 5 room HDB unit in Bishan is a pretty good size, at 1,302 square feet. Understandably, it is getting on in age, having been built in 1987 – but that’s part of the equation of living somewhere as central as Bishan.
Location wise you are in close proximity to Bishan Harmony Park, and Guangyang Primary and Secondary is just at your doorstep. It isn’t the closest located to the MRT, although you could say it is still in walkable distance, at about 10-minutes to Bishan MRT (Circle and North South line). And of course you have the ever popular Junction 8 for shopping and grocery/food needs.
The flat itself is done up in a rather eclectic style. It’s certainly not for everyone, but for those more adventurous in style and taste.

Why I like it
If you are into nature, and love a good dose of greenery, the location of this unit will be almost a no-brainer for you. It’s located at Sunset Way (along Clementi Road) and is sandwiched in between Maju Forest and Clementi Forest. You are also super close to Clementi Neighbourhood Park, and Clementi Crescent Playground is right opposite which is super for those who have kids. You can also make the crossing via the overhead bridge, which eases the concern for parents as the traffic on Clementi Road is usually pretty fast moving.
This is a 1,603 square foot Executive Maisonette, so it’s certainly no slouch in the size department. As with most EMs, the bedrooms are on the second floor, so it does afford residents a better level of privacy from the dining/living areas. The best part of this unit is the design. It’s done up in a bit of a raw, industrial and woody look, and great for those that are reluctant to have additional expense on construction and further time constraint.

Why I like it
While Sembawang may be a little too far off for most people, if you are looking at the area, this should be one of the better locations to concentrate on. For one, you are facing the Sungei Sembawang (Sembawang River, basically). And you are also able to walk to Sembawang MRT station and Sun Plaza.
This is an Executive Apartment, so it is quite blessed in the size department. It’s 1,474 square feet of space, which is definitely excellent in today’s market. It also certainly helps that the interior is done up in a relatively minimalist style, so you really get a sense of the space here.

Why I like it
Walking into this unit, you’ll immediately notice the open configuration where the living room and kitchen are within sight, spanning the length of the unit. The interior design is also very simple and classy, meaning very little needs to be spent on renovations given the lack of unnecessary carpentry, especially in the living area.
The unique entranceway to the 3 bedrooms also caught my attention, as this extra layer adds more privacy to the rooms which is always handy when guests are around.
The bedrooms are always very spacious, with the master even being able to fit 2 study tables so it can double up as an office! The windows, while it isn’t full-height given the age of the development, does span the width of the room and provides a lot of sunlight into the home.
Aside from the interior, this unit is also just a 5-minute walk away from Pasir Ris MRT which is quite attractive!

Why I like it
One thing that stands out is the size, a whopping 1,689 sqft of space which is probably one of the most spacious HDBs you can get out there. And the layout does not hide how big the unit is since you’ll be able to see right to the end once you turn into the dining area.
In terms of renovation, the owners have already done up quite a lot of carpentry especially in the living area. I like that there is storage space that spans the length of the living room from floor to ceiling. This type of carpentry Is usually quite expensive and spans in the thousands, so it’s good savings for those who intend to have more storage space.
Given the bedroom sizes, each bedroom could can also fit in a study table on top of a queen-sized bed – certainly a rarity in today’s context!
Overall, the location is both good and bad. It’s just a 7 minute walk to Simei MRT, however, residents will need to cross an overhead bridge to get past the PIE, and getting to Tampines MRT would be better by bus instead of by foot.
